_I began creating pottery nine years ago. I make functional pots and incorporate plants from my organic garden into the surface of my work. I also like to paint impressionistic pictures on my mid-range pottery.

A passion to express myself has led me to many creative projects throughout the years. My diverse background includes photography, theatre, music, costume design, acting for stage and screen, life modeling, sculpture and ceramic art.

Nature, as life, is organized and yet imperfect. I journey through clay to germinate these imperfections into form and function.
Textures from trunks of trees to the flow of underwater life are willed into varied structures in clay.

I notice children. Their emotions flow, not in sequence but at whim. Every piece I make evokes some sense memory at times of childhood in the braiding of hair, playing in a muddy pond or scraping a knee on the sidewalk and the movement of these moments.

The first time I put my hands into clay, I knew I had come home. Working in clay is meditative, centering and a dialog I engage in with the spirit inside me, that elusive part that can only be communicated with by listening. I listen with my hands and my heart, exploring.

My pottery is inspired by the beauty of mathematics and the dynamics of ocean waves. I want each piece to ask to be touched, handled and used. The art is in the function. Pottery that is used establishes a bond - it's an old friend that provides comfort while at the same time is a work of art containing a bit of the maker's soul.

_I always loved playing in clay as a child, but didn't embrace playing in clay as a full-time passion until I retired from my very different career. I especially enjoy making functional wheel-thrown pottery that people take home, live with, and enjoy. I like glazes that blend and flow and suggest the textures in nature.

As a ceramic sculptor, I have the exquisite pleasure of moving clay around. It's the ultimate, most plastic of mediums—and then once fired, the clay becomes durable.  Mud to magic.  What could be better? My subjects explore themes of shared human experience; thus, the human figure—particularly the girl or woman—best expresses my ideas, my own voice.  My work invites identification, reflection, questioning and humor. I hope that it encourages my viewers to revisit their own stories, ideas and images.

By life circumstance I have been given the gift of doing what I enjoy. Working with clay is an infinite process that has brought new perspectives and new possibilities.

I am currently exploring animal forms combined with firing techniques that result in random patterns that are unique to each piece.

My work is not particularly linear. It tends to wander from one place to another depending on what my intuition dictates at any given moment. The results are often archetypal, mythological, and culturally diverse.

I sense that there is an integral connection between all life forms. This idea paves the way for endless discovery. There's nothing that does NOT exist inside that lump of clay. In the end, I leave the results to you, the viewer.

As an Architect and Urban Designer I’ve been interested in providing a designed framework for using the building or the neighborhood, the container if you will. A framework that respects, acknowledges function, asks for participation and encourages the user to experience proportion, light/shadow, color and the complexity of those and other textural qualities.

As a ceramicist, I bring that dynamic to my functional table art. I use abstracted natural images superimposed into the plastique surface of the clay in a manner suggestive of controlled free forms. Many of my objects function as containers for natural objects: flowers, plants, branches, moss, etc. All of the work invites and encourages observation and reflection so as to become individualized by their owners.

I experience my art as a radical response and prayer to life. Each piece develops as a deep, evolutionary process, expressing my personal spiritual journey and the vicissitudes of beingness. Each sculpture arises out of an erotic dance between my hands and the clay, as we give, yield, caress, and let go into the unknown. My creative hope is to connect to you, the viewer, at a heart level. I am grateful to you for witnessing my creations, and for the experiences from which the art has emerged.

Born and raised in Recife, Brazil, I rediscovered my love for art while an exchange student in Colorado and decided to return to the U.S. to pursue that interest. I moved to Fort Collins, CO , where I fell in love with clay, met outstanding mentors and friends and learned a great deal from them. I am currently living in Asheville, NC and working out of Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts. Pinching as a process allows me to work with my hands directly on the clay, virtually eliminating the need for tools. With my pinchery I take handmade to the extreme by pressing finger prints into every inch of the surfaces. The technique allows for the forms to grow organically and creates a rich variation of color and texture. My pieces are built through a combination of pinching soft clay, coils, slabs and the occasional use of molds.

Handmade clay everything.

I believe that lamps should be a work of art, functional and an integral part of a room’s statement. I find my inspiration from textures in nature and architecture.

I've been surrounded by art my entire life. My Grandmother and Aunt are both talented painters who inspired me at an early age. Following in their footsteps I started painting at age 15 and studied Art History at UNC Chapel Hill. However, I went on to work at the New Yorker magazine, get a masters degree in international studies, serve as a Peace Corps volunteer, and work as a humanitarian worker for 10 years. But art has always been my passion. I plan to develop several lamp lines this coming year.

I received my BA in Art at Metropolitan State College in Denver, CO in 1977 and my MFA from Denver University in 1983. I taught ceramics at Metropolitan State College from 1984-1987. My work has been published in American Craft Magazine Feb/Mar 1994. "Raku-A Review of Contemporary Work" by Tim Andrews, 1996.

The variety of interpretations contained in the word "Nature" has been my primary inspiration. My work is an eclectic amalgam of ideas/forms broadly related to the human condition.

I have always been an observer of people, so it’s no surprise that I am inspired to create the human head and torso in clay. Each of my pieces is an individual that reflects tenderness, vulnerability and a part of the human condition. Many are whimsical, some enigmatic, all are engaging. My purpose is to delight---the maker and the beholder.
