Carol’s work was called a “silent form of poetry” by the Asheville Citizen Times in the 1980s. In the 90s, Dale Neale of the Asheville paper wrote about Bomer’s solo show at Mars Hill College’s Wiezenblatt Gallery, “Anyone who likes their Christian images served up in safe Sunday school settings, beware.” Her work deals with issues of redemption and healing of a broken people who live in a broken world. It is rich with layered meaning and metaphor. For example:

The Parable of the Seed / Incarnation Series

After a trip to study in Italy, Carol began to work in mixed media. She incorporated text and manipulated images into her work to investigate the postmodern manipulation of words and images for power. One of her series, Global City Babel, uses this layering of text and image. Her new book about this series is called, The City of God/City of Man.

Her interest in combining word and image has led to a collaboration with Virginia poet Suzanne Rhodes. Although her work has been influenced by Rhodes’ poetry for more than ten years, they are now working together to produce a poetry/art book. Much of Bomer’s new work is related to this collaboration.
