Spring Open House at Curve Studios (preview#4)

Friday and Saturday, May 2 & 3, 2008

Curve Studios is a trinity of art workspaces located in Asheville’s River Arts District. Take this opportunity to meet Curve Studios newest artists as well as revisiting artists you know during our Open House Sale Friday, May 2nd from 4-8pm and Saturday May 3rd from 12-6pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Vicki Brow’s palette explores intense color as an expression of emotion, using textures and lines.  Her abstract figurative work is an artistic response in color of the movement and beauty of the body and what lies behind it.

April 26! Open House at Riverview Station

The artists at Riverview Station have been working hard all winter, and will open their studio doors for visitors on Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 to 4:00. Located in the historic River Arts District of Asheville, RIverview Station is the working home to an ecletic mix of artists.

Amongst the artist exhibiting will be Fleta Monaghan (oils and acrylics), Jeannius Designs (filigree and gemstone jewelry), Avaloo (wearable art),  Martin DeWitt, paintings,  Viki Austin Kirk (oil paintings), Paul Hershey and Jennifer Murphy of Organic Armor. Also a special group exhibit of the River's Edge Studio Painters featuring their pastels, oils, egg tempera and acrylic paintngs.

Dinner and a Documentary featuring Mel Chin

Mel Chin is featured in this week's Dinner and a Documentary at the Flood Gallery. Mel Chin, a resident of North Carolina and featured artist on the PBS Art: 21 Series, will introduce and screen his 2006 animated-video 9-11/9-11, as well as his 2004 Warehouse of Mass Destruction project documentary.

Dinner & a Documentary is an educational film series that provides artists and art enthusiasts an opportunity to think critically about contemporary arts and culture over tasty dishes by Mamacita¹s.

Holly de Saillan’s raku fired work is an investigation of creatures that we depend on for our very survival. De Saillan says, “My artwork is a reflection of the intricate, interconnected, intriguing world of our insect relations.  The recent series of work "The Balancing Beetle Series" pays homage to the delicate balance that humans strike with the world of insects.”

Skip Rohde--Asheville Artist Wins National Competition

A noted Asheville artist has claimed the top prize in a national competition for Iraq War memorial art.  Skip Rohde’s painting entitled “Warrior” was awarded first place in the competition sponsored by Art Cries Out, an organization that promotes artworks about social issues.  The juror was Marilyn Goldstein, the Director of Art History at Long Island University, New York.

Warrior

“Warrior” is a life-size painting of a paraplegic veteran in a wheelchair. It is part of Rohde’s series of paintings entitled “Meditation on War”, about the impact of conflict on people, places, and society.  The series was recently exhibited in Asheville and Marshall. “Warrior” is currently on display in Touchstone Gallery in Hendersonville.

Rohde’s studio is in Asheville’s historic River Arts District.  His paintings, including “Warrior”, can be seen on his web site, www.skiprohde.com.

Constance Williams’ enchanting paintings are created by a historical method called Encaustic, using oils and bees wax… as well as acrylic, pencil and mixed media.  She states, “ It’s all about looking in new ways; experimenting daily and interpreting with a new language, opening the mind to a world beyond the obvious, escaping traditional trappings and transmit a concentrated experience with a variety of mediums.”

Color Mixing Basics at River's Edge Studio

A new section of Color Mixing has been added to the schedule at the request of students! Taught by Fleta Monaghan, this class is a great start for adults who wish to learn to paint, and artists who need some updated information and practice with modern pigments. Not sure what to buy, or how to mix the color you need? This is the class for you! River's Edge Studio is located in the historic RIver Arts District of Asheville.

Insurgents

Flood Gallery Fine Art Center proudly presents Insurgents, curated by its recently hired Assistant Director, Reneé M. Cagnina. This exhibition subversively addresses the internal battles that plague the psyches of its participating artists and exemplifies a unique ability to diplomatically address politics through vibrant illustrations. Insurgents will run April 5th through May 11th, 2008
