I am originally from Australia where my family were mostly farmers and fishermen, so you could say a strong connection to the landscape was inevitable.
In 2009 I moved with my family to the mountains of east Tennessee and slowly began to unravel an understanding for this vastly different landscape. The variations in seasonal and topographical conditions are truly a gift and a great challenge for any artist. The landscape is so dynamic, you can see forest grow crazily only to be smashed back down by wild storms and heavy snow, mountains crumble and streams rise and subside overnight.
In time, I hope to be able to develop the themes I have begun with even greater understanding of the landscape.

Todd Frahm
Stone Cloud Studio

Todd Frahm graduated from Illinois University in Champaign-Urbana with his BFA in 1998 and received his MFA in 2002 from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Frahm has exhibited nationally in Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Tennessee and internationally in Canada and Korea. Frahm has also completed several large public works in California, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Missouri. I am interested in the visual dualities that exist between language and medium.

Stone, wood, steel, clay, bronze, as well as a variety of non-traditional materials

I see patterns. I am curious about perception of time:  changing, dreams for future, wisdom when looking into past.  Why do we engage life so intimately at times, and so far removed at others?  What do we long for?  What do we accept?

Currently strong themes of home, the source of what sustains us, and the humble nature found in many of my characters guide me to answering the questions that roll through my mind of: What is Safe? What is Contentment?  What is it to Celebrate?

In my latest series of paintings I have explored the mountains as a subject matter. I have lived most of my life in the shadow of mountains;the landscape of Western Norway where I grew up and of Western North Carolina are both defined by their mountains. I am intrigued by the emotional response that the landscape evokes and the question it brings up about belonging and identity.

I have done art for as long as I can remember. I paint subjects that I love to look at or think about and I love to look at and think about a lot of things. My work is diverse because of this but it is all an honest attempt to resolve questions and to explore life. Often, my paintings have symbolic meaning and I reference art history subtly in my work. I tend to develop my various series of particular subjects over time. Sometimes when life seems too fragmented and confused, I do mosaic.

Realist/symbolic oil paintings and mosaic using smalti, porcelain, glazed ceramic and found objects
