Emilie S. Berls
Copper Fish Metal Arts

Picture
I've been designing and creating handcrafted jewelry and small sculpture since 2005 when I moved to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. In my work I hope you will see a flair for the dramatic - which stems from my background as a theatrical costume designer - balanced with wearability, elegance, and fun. I believe everything we choose to wear is part of our visual vocabulary: our way of communicating things about ourselves to others without saying a word. Jewelry is our punctuation!

I work in copper, silver, and gold mixed with gemstones and enamels. My pieces tend to be one-of-a-kind or limited production. I am always eager to move on to the next new technique and idea.

Pattie Ann Hale

Picture
My art is a reflection of rhythm, movement, and atmospheric spaces. By utilizing my own unique symbolisms, themes, and introspective imagery, I hope to demonstrate the language of the Spirit. Sometimes the language looks as natural as an autumn leaf, other times like an exuberant abstraction. My art mirrors my conversation with the Creator – it is my visual prayer. Being from the mountains of Southwest Virginia and having a deep connection with the land and that culture, I often meditatively paint contemporary themes that reflect my rich Appalachian heritage. I teach workshops, write, and give seminars concerning the spiritual in the arts. My workshops and seminars offer ways for participants to develop their own visual conversation with God.

Thrown, carved, manipulated, extruded, slab, cut, stamped and what ever it takes to make it fit my vision that one does not have to take the FUN out of "FUNction". My work comes alive with a sassy attitude and plenty of pizzazz to charm and warm your heart and food both.

My pottery is made to be used and enjoyed. In this world of mass production there is a special joy and luxury to be gained by adding handmade pottery.

When you hold the pottery in your hands and enjoy using it on a daily basis, you complete the cycle I began with wet clay. A wonderful gift and lovely addition to your home and table. ART FOR LIVING!

Bet Kindley
Bet Kindley Photography and Encaustic--Sassafrass Studio

Picture
I am an encaustic painter and photographer living in my native city of Asheville, NC. Even as a child I loved art. I was taught to color between the lines and I did a decent job of it, though I wasn't very good at drawing those lines. I eventually discovered that photography allowed me to be creative and that light was my palette and "lines" weren't necessary. Now, I paint in encaustic as well and often integrate my own photography into the medium.
I am a member of F/32, CNPA, International Encaustic Artists and Director of Encaustic Education at River's Edge Studio in the District.

My creations have a traditional and natural feel to complement any style home. I am an active member of the American Association of Woodturners, Brasstown Woodturners Guild, Carolina Mountain Woodturners and Handmade in America . Fleta Monaghan
River's Edge Studio

Picture
I am always seeking an essence of thought and feeling when I combine imagery with materials. There is an unbroken thread that weaves through all my work, no matter what materials I use or which techniques I employ. The Gulf of Mexico strongly influenced my visual, spiritual and philosophical senses as have the Mountains here in North Carolina. My most recent work reflects the influence of both these environments. Water, the source of all life on earth, is a key element in all these paintings of both night waterscapes and contemporary cascading water scenes.

Kevin Palme

Picture
The primary basis for my work is my relationship to landscapes and places. Through painting, I explore the visceral and emotional responses that I have in a particular place. The works allow me to understand how aspects of a place such as the quality of light or the sheer scale of a space affect me; for viewers, the works initiate a dialogue regarding how we engage with and respond to environments.

Melanie Mitchell Robertson
The Village Potters

Picture
My face tiles and vases are raku fired, many with an underglaze. My painting background heavily influences what I design, with an emphasis on the work of French Expressionist Henri Matisse; especially his contour face and figure drawings. I am also a teacher and direct The Teaching Center at The Village Potters where we offer classes, camps, clinics, and our Master's Series. As an Asheville native, I love what is happening in the local arts community and thrilled to be a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild and now the River Arts District.
