The Mark Bettis Studio & Gallery will kick off spring by hosting “828,” an exhibit comprised of works by five local artists that reflect the highly individual and rich relationships each has with western North Carolina. The participating artists are contemporary painter Bettis himself, mixed media artist Jacqui Fehl, painter and sculptor David Sheldon, collage artist Grant Penny, and nature painter Tess Darling. The show’s titular reference not only points to the area code of Asheville and its environs, it alludes to the uniform size of the over 50 works that will appear in the show – all will measure 8 X 8 inches.
Bettis and his fellow artists will present images that are subjective in nature and intention, yet likely to stir feelings in viewers that are nearly universal in terms of how we reflect on, recall, and interpret place. Some works are influenced by the natural or urban worlds, others by geographical or emotional landscapes. The juxtaposition of a vibrant mixture of media, textures, and artistic energies will make for an engaging viewer and collector experience, and serve as a special opportunity to become acquainted with and support this artist group.
Bettis believes that, from a curation standpoint, the marrying of an array of diverse artists’ work with thematic unity allows the pieces to read simultaneously as cohesive and distinctive. “Since each of us has interacted with these surroundings in different ways, used varied tools and media, and brought our personal histories to the work, the show is exciting, but also delightfully accessible,” he notes.
“828” will commence with an opening reception on Saturday, April 13th, from 5:30-7:30 pm at Mark Bettis Studio & Gallery, 123 Roberts Street, in the River Arts District’s historic WEDGE building. Light hors d’ouevres and refreshments will be served. Visitors can experience “828” during the gallery and studio’s business hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. The show will be on view and available for purchase through Saturday, May 11th.
