Feeling comfortable and successful with oils (as with any medium) is a process, so this workshop will benefit the painter with some knowledge in the medium and wanting to brush up on their skills.
There is so much to think about when you begin an oil painting, and it’s not hard to lose your way and end up with a muddy, flat painting, perhaps because you are so excited about what you think will be the result of your efforts. But, often, you end up disappointed – this is not how you wanted it to look ! The goal of this workshop is to guide you toward success, and end with a painting that makes you feel happy, and satisfied!
We will begin with the basics, using the landscape as our genre, and there will be step by step demonstrations along the way, as each concept is explained. The painting will be developed using modern, more intuitive techniques, but not forgoing or forgetting some of the classical methods. We will cover how to build layers, and what medium to use, and when. Colors – understanding them, and how to work with a limited palette to create a more cohesive painting – how using colors properly help to create a sense of depth a sense of mood. Brushes – what brushes to use, how to hold them properly and use them to create different strokes and textures. What is glazing, how and when is that done? How about scumbling? And, importantly, what are you trying to convey in your painting.
