Luminous Layers: Watercolor and Wax with Bridget Benton and Lorelle Bacon

Learn to combine traditional watercolor painting with contemporary mixed-media and encaustic techniques to create beautiful representational or abstract artwork with unexpected depth and luminosity! In this beginner-friendly workshop, watercolorist Lorelle Bacon will work side-by-side with encaustic and mixed-media artist Bridget Benton to provide students with instruction on how to combine the best of both worlds for unique effects.

You’ll start the first day learning about watercolor, including basic wet-into-wet and wet-into dry watercolor techniques, color mixing, and several methods to create stunning special effects and texture. We will explore painting on watercolor paper, Ampersand Encausticbord, and even watercolor paper mounted to panel.

In the afternoon, we’ll dive into encaustic, covering safety and basic application methods. Students will learn how to use wax as a resist for watercolor, as well as experimenting with non-traditional water media like Inktense pencils and water soluble graphite.

The next day, when their paintings are completely dry, students will have the opportunity to apply encaustic medium to seal and enhance their watercolor paintings. We’ll also use water media and ink to create collage elements to layer into our paintings. Finally, students will be able to build up layers of encaustic and collage elements and use a variety of mixed media techniques to build additional color, texture, visual elements, and depth to their work.
