Painting on aluminum? Why, yes! Painting on metal panels, usually copper, has been historically recorded since before Rembrandt. But more recently, artists have been experimenting with aluminum composite panels, which are lighter and have stronger construction. Alumacomp panels, which we will be working on, are 100% archival, acid free, will not mold or mildew.
In this workshop, we will experiment with oil paints on this interesting surface. It can be used primed, or unprimed. Yet another plus to aluminum is that the exposed area will not tarnish due to its resistance to oxidation. Thus, you can leave an exposed edge, which gives the painting a beautiful, shimmery border; or you can paint directly on the surface, allowing the aluminum to peek through. Either way, it’s fun to explore new ways to perk up your paintings! The splendor of Fall colors is the perfect match for this surface.
Some experience with oils is helpful. Materials provided, including some reference photos.
