WEEKEND WORKSHOP: Cold Wax & Oils – Works on Paper with artist Liz Hosier

In this weekend workshop, we will explore abstract painting using oil and cold wax medium on paper. Artists will experiment with layering colors and paint, creating texture, using a variety of tools, and expanding their mark making techniques. The workshop includes instructor demonstrations, along with plenty of time to paint and experiment.

Some supplies are provided by the instructor and some must be brought by students.

Art supplies that are provided with in the cost of this class will include: Cold wax medium, powdered pigments, and graphite. Some transparent oil paint and oil sticks will also be included. Supplies that students “must bring” and “good to have” are found below.

Assortment of oil paints in opaques and transparents

4” rubber brayer

Palette knife – preferably trowel style in a variety of sizes. Longer knives are good not only for mixing but also to apply and push the paint.

Latex/nitrile gloves to protect your hands

Gamsol odorless mineral spirits or other odorless mineral spirits with container to hold it

12” X 16” palette paper or freezer paper

Paper towels or rags for cleanup – process messy

Artist masking tape that peels off easily

Supplies that are good to have include:

Powered pigment, pastel sticks (old), pan pastel or powdered charcoal/graphite

Oil bars or oil sticks

Graphite sticks any size

Brushes (2 or 3) – very old

Anything to move paint around – old hotel keys, old credit cards, plastic coated cards, small squeegees

Anything to make impressions – tissue paper, wooden skewers, combs, wax paper, stencils, etc.

Mineral oil for quick cleanup
