SUMMARY:Vintage Photo Effects in Encaustic with Bridget Benton\, APR 8TH (
DESCRIPTION:$185.00\nWednesday\, April 8th – 10 AM to 5 PM- $185 – All materials for class are included! \nIf you’ve been wanting to add moody effects to your photography\, or combine photos and encaustic\, this is a great one-day\, beginner-friendly intro! Bridget will supply images in class for you to use already printed with archival inks on encaustic-friendly paper\, so no need to bring anything! \nBridget will share her favorite method for mounting photographs on cradled wood panels\, as well as the step-by-step method she uses to layer colored pencil\, watercolor\, encaustic medium\, oil paint\, and pan pastels to bring the images to life. The effect is a lot like a wonderful\, vintage\, hand-tinted photograph! Add collage elements and textured encaustic paint into the encaustic\, and the results can be quirky\, energetic\, and much more modern! \nStudents will have an opportunity to work with two images\, one sized for an 8×8 panel and one sized for an 8×10 panel. Students will be able to choose from a variety of black and white or sepia-toned “found ancestor” portraits\, landscapes\, and more. \nWant to use your own images? Bridget will reach out a few weeks before class\, and for an extra fee\, students with digital photo experience can send two images to Bridget for formatting and printing. \nStudents will come away with two completed pieces\, as well as information on how to print and work with their own images to create “encaustic photo effects” in their own home studios. Participants will also receive basic instruction on safety and as well as techniques for working with encaustic medium and encaustic collage. \nThis class seats 8 students. For any questions regarding our cancellation or transfer policy\, please refer to the link in our navigation bar.

SUMMARY:Modern Florals with Pen\, Ink & Watercolors with local artist Casi Fordham.
DESCRIPTION:This is great class for anyone who loves the idea of creating with florals and/or wants more time and support with basic sketching that you can use as a springboard for your art-making. You do not need any experience with drawing for this class\, just a desire to learn some foundational skills with observation and illustration- starting with botanicals\, using spring blooms at your table for inspiration! \nIn this class local watercolor artist Casi Fordham will share tips\, techniques and tools for botanical illustrations\, with emphasis on loose sketching (aka: not exact representations\, but showing a likeness to flowers). Following the sketching portion of the class\, Casi will guide you with mixing and applying watercolors to your sketches. \nYou will learn various wet into wet watercolor techniques\, dry-brushing & using dark & light values as you build layers of color and shape to create your blooms\, adding details and embellishments afterward. \nAllowing the pigment and water to interact as they expand across the page together is a great way to trust the creative process as it unfolds. Watercolors have a way of leading and surprising you if you allow them to! \nYou’ll be guided in exploring basic watercolor techniques\, breaking down the elements of building values\, while being guided by demos each step along the way. You will bring home your practice pieces as well as a larger piece you’ll work up to. \nPLEASE BRING WITH YOU: a vase for your flower (s) that you will place in front of you for visual reference.

SUMMARY:Go With the Flow: Adventures in Fluid Acrylics with Robyn Crawford\, APR 18th (10am to 4pm) 2026
DESCRIPTION:$165.00\nSaturday\, April 18th – 10 AM to 4 PM- $165 – All materials supplied! \nIf you’ve ever watched those hypnotic fluid‑acrylic videos and thought\, I want to feel that magic\, this workshop is your chance to dive in—literally and creatively. Expect to feel mesmerized\, loosened up\, and totally absorbed as you watch color swirl\, stretch\, and dance across your canvas. This is the kind of class where you lose track of time in the best possible way. \nYou’ll experience the joy of letting paint move with you instead of fighting against you\, discovering how different mediums\, consistencies\, and techniques create wildly different effects. Instead of frustration or muddy results\, you’ll feel that satisfying “ohhh\, that’s how it works” click as everything starts to flow. With plenty of demos\, hands‑on experimenting\, and space to play\, you’ll leave with pieces that feel alive—and uniquely yours. \nIt’s a relaxed\, creative\, slightly addictive kind of day\, complete with a lunch break to recharge and admire your works‑in‑progress. All materials are included; all you need to bring is your curiosity (and a snack). \nThis class seats 8 students. SUMMARY:Feminine and the Clay Figure\, with local artist Katie Croft
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of working with your hands\, clay and your imagination as we explore our relationship to ancient female figurines with Katie’s thoughtful guidance. \nIn this class\, Katie will introduce us to the realm of experimental archaeology\, using clay as a way to explore the meaning and possible uses of historical Venus Figurines. These figurines appear across many ancient cultures—images of voluptuous female bodies without identifying facial features\, repeated again and again throughout antiquity. While their exact purpose remains unknown\, their presence has endured\, inviting curiosity\, reverence\, and inquiry. \nThrough hands-on making\, we will explore the how and why of these objects\, employing experimental archaeology as a way of learning through embodied practice. \nParticipants will build their own female figurines\, guided by personal intention and informed by culture of origin\, family lineage\, and individual needs\, hopes\, and desires. Throughout the process\, we will reflect together on why we made these objects\, how they might be used\, and how they may continue to influence our lives beyond the workshop. \nWe will work with materials of the ancient makers\, meaning we will be making our figures from clay. There is no experience with clay necessary as within each of you the knowledge already exists to create these figures as your ancestors did.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Pysanky Easter egg workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pysanky are a lot like Asheville- unique\, fun and colorful!\n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will be making beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky. You will learn the method of batik – also called wax-resist – dying. You will also be familiarized with the wide range of Ukrainian folk art traditional patterns\, designs and symbols and their history. The designs are made with beeswax which is melted in the flame of a candle and applied to the egg using a tool called a kistka. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes. At the end of the process the beeswax is melted off to reveal the beautiful and colorful design. You may use the traditional patterns\, or also freestyle and make up your own design. Pysanky are fun\, relaxing\, and meditative to create. And\, the symbols are all good wishes\, so it is always the perfect time to create eggs with symbols wishing for good health\, long life\, strength and protection and other good things. \n\n\n\n$75 per person (cash/check) or $78 (credit card) includes use of all supplies. Please contact me for more information or to sign up! $10 discount for WNC residents – mention code: WNC2026. \nFull schedule at https://www.ashevillestudioa.com/workshops or contact me to if you’d like to request a different date! \nEmail andreakulish [at] gmail dot com or call/text 828 423 6459 to sign up or for more info!

SUMMARY:Healing Threads ATELIER with guest artist Elizabeth Garlington
DESCRIPTION:The ATELIER at ArtPlay is a new type of offering designed to support your creative process within a circle of community while receiving guidance and inspiration from an artist. It is neither a traditional class nor an open studio. Instead\, it is a gently guided creative experience. \nThis session is open to those who have previously taken Elizabeth’s Healing Threads workshop\, as well as those who are seeking dedicated exploration time and guidance for their fiber or stitch-based creative projects. \nDuring this three-hour creative immersion\, you’ll enter an extended period of intentional play and experimentation with fiber materials. With Elizabeth as your guide\, you will deepen and expand your creative process while continuing to explore the layering of fabrics with stitching. Along the way\, you may also discover the meditative and calming qualities that often emerge through this type of handwork. \nIn this studio-based Healing Threads Atelier\, participants will receive supportive\, responsive guidance as they continue developing fiber-based works already in progress\, while also being encouraged in the initiation of new pieces. As art is made in community\, each participant contributes an important energy to the Healing Threads Atelier circle. \nParticipants are invited to bring personal works-in-progress\, completed pieces they wish to share with the group\, and any materials that support their individual projects. Elizabeth will also have a selection of fiber-based supplies available in the studio.
