SUMMARY:Vintage Photo Effects In Encaustic with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a great introduction to one way of working with black and white photography and encaustic. Bridget will share her favorite method for mounting photographs on cradled wood panels\, as well as how she layers colored pencil\, encaustic medium\, oil paint or oil sticks\, and pan pastels to enhance the images. The effect can be a like a wonderful\, vintage\, hand-tinted photograph! Add collage elements and stencil encaustic paint directly into the encaustic\, and the results can be quirky and much more modern. \nStudents will have an opportunity to work with two images\, one sized for an 8×8 panel and one sized for an 8×10 panel. Students will be able to choose from a variety of black and white “found ancestor” portraits\, still lives\, and more. For an extra fee\, students with digital photo experience can send two images to Bridget at least one week before class for formatting and printing. \nStudents will come away with a minimum of two completed pieces\, as well as information on how to print and work with their own images to create “encaustic photo effects” in their own home studios. Participants will also receive basic instruction on safety and as well as techniques for working with encaustic medium and encaustic collage.

SUMMARY:Encaustic Flow: Water Media and Wax with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Water and wax may not mix\, but watercolor and encaustic can! In this class\, we’ll explore combining various water-soluble media like watercolor\, gouache\, graphite\, and pencils\, and crayons with encaustic wax. Traditional watercolor artists will enjoy seeing how encaustic can be used to seal their paintings\, as well as add additional mood and depth. Experimental mixed media artists will love creating layered paintings and seeing how media like water soluble crayons can be used between layers of encaustic paint. \nThe first day\, we will explore painting with various water-soluble media on watercolor paper\, Ampersand Encausticbord\, and even watercolor paper mounted to panel. Students can also experiment with non-traditional water media like Inktense and water soluble graphite. \nIn the afternoon\, we’ll dive into encaustic\, covering safety and basic application methods. Students will learn how to use wax as a resist for watercolor. We’ll also use water media and ink to create collage elements to layer into our paintings. \nThe next day\, when their paintings are completely dry\, students will have the opportunity to apply encaustic medium to seal and enhance their watercolor paintings. Finally\, students will be able to build up layers of encaustic and collage elements and use a variety of mixed media techniques – including oil and pan pastel – to build additional color\, texture\, and visual elements\, as well as adding depth to their work. \nStudents will leave with multiple completed small works\, and as well as a better understanding of both watercolor and encaustic!

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Pastels with Susan Sinyai
DESCRIPTION:Pastel is a wonderful medium\, with its luminous and vibrant colors (not pastel at all!)\, inviting you to play\, allowing you to be expressive\, or precise. But\, sometimes it can seem daunting on many levels\, and let’s face it\, feeling comfortable with any medium is a process. \nHaving two days to learn\, experiment and develop your own painting really gets you in the groove! For example – so many colors ( or not enough)\, and how to use them without creating mud. How to hold the pastel – does one draw or paint with the pastel stick\, does it matter if the sticks break? What’s the difference between a hard pastel and a soft pastel\, which one to use? And\, to blend or not to blend\, and how to do that. Why is using different marks important? What surfaces are best to work on\, and which ones will accept a wet medium as an underpainting. What IS an underpainting? Learn and experiment with different techniques to begin your pastel painting. \nAs you can see\, there is a lot to think about! This two day workshop will answer ALL the above \nquestions\, and more\, allowing you to explore and experiment with this lovely medium and build your skills. An excellent opportunity to learn with guidance\, but also to brush up on your skills and take your pastel work to a new level. Step by step demonstrations along the way will be provided\, allowing you to try things one at a time before putting it all together. Then\, with some gentle guidance\, you will create a painting\, in your own style\, from your own resource material. Day One will be given to experimenting with all the above and getting comfortable with the medium. Towards the end of the day\, you will begin to plan your painting\, using your own resource material. You can plan and lay in the foundations of your painting\, and be ready to begin \, and finish\, on Day Two. The best part – you will be excited about starting your next painting! All materials provided for this workshop!

SUMMARY:First Friday Wine + Cheese Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Featuring a FREE wine tasting with Empire Distributors and live music by the Tony Black Trio! \nTony Black is a bassist\, multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and producer residing in Waynesville\, North Carolina. He was most recently on tour as a member of The Marshall Tucker Band. Tony started playing bass while in junior high school\, when several friends got together to form a punk rock band. He later joined up with Southern California hardcore punk heroes\, Stalag 13 and Dr. Know\, for regional and national touring. After experimenting with several post punk groups\, Tony found himself in San Francisco\, playing bass for avant-garde shred guitarist Buckethead and his band\, who toured under the wing of several well-known bands such as Primus\, Mr. Bungle\, and System of a Down. \nIn order to gain the skills necessary for session work\, to become a better sight reader\, and explore different styles of music\, Tony enrolled in The Los Angeles College of Music. It was during this time in Southern California when Tony was able to perform alongside legendary jazz artists Flora Purim and Airto Moriera. \nTony has been blessed to play with creative musicians of all styles\, direct a youth rock band program\, teach private bass instruction\, and perform with legendary southern rock and soul artists such as the incredible Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie)\, Chris Hicks (Marshall Tucker)\, Robert Nix (Atlanta Rhythm Section)\, Bob Burns\, and Artimus Pyle (Lynyrd Skynyrd). In 2018\, Tony performed 130 concerts with The Marshall Tucker Band\, including supporting Lynyrd Skynyrd on their Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour.
