SUMMARY:Ukrainian Pysanky Egg Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pysanky are a lot like Asheville- unique\, fun and colorful! \nIn this workshop we will be making beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky. You will learn the method of batik – also called wax-resist – dying. You will also be familiarized with the wide range of Ukrainian folk art traditional patterns\, designs and symbols and their history. The designs are made with beeswax which is melted in the flame of a candle and applied to the egg using a tool called a kistka. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes. At the end of the process the beeswax is melted off to reveal the beautiful and colorful design. You may use the traditional patterns\, or also freestyle and make up your own design. Pysanky are fun\, relaxing\, and meditative to create. And\, the symbols are all good wishes\, so it is always the perfect time to create eggs with symbols wishing for good health\, long life\, strength and protection and other good things. \nMost people create 1 to 2 pysanky which you take home with you. $75 per person (cash/check) or $78 (credit card) includes use of all supplies. Please contact me for more information or to sign up!

SUMMARY:Bella Italia: Works by Philip DeAngelo & Michael Cartellone
DESCRIPTION:“Bella Italia” came about after Michael Cartellone visited the gallery\, and he and I discovered we both have ancestral history from Sicily. In addition to being the drummer for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Michael is a life-long fine art painter. While we have visually different styles\, we have in common a passion for texture\, as well as a love for the scenic beauty of Italy\, and I’m so pleased to host this two-man show. \nIt opens to the public Saturday\, May 25th\, and we’d love to see you. We are open our usual 10 – 5\, and Michael will join me to chat with our visitors starting at noon.

SUMMARY:Working In 3D Encaustic Wax with Gina Louthian-Stanley
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will dive right in exploring the sculptural possibilities of plaster cloth\, wax and encaustic to construct an encaustic 3-D work which best represents your personal idea or creative desire! \nRigid and strong when dry\, plaster cloth makes a wonderful support for dimensional encaustic work. Once the form is created and plaster applied\, we will add Encaustic medium and fuse it to the sculptural composition using a variety of techniques. In the class\, we will have one 12” disc and one 12” rectangular shape to use as a base for the plaster cloth. As the structures near completion\, you will learn how to add image transfer\, found or small personal objects and collage into the sculptures to create your work and discuss a variety of ways to display your work. As we create\, we will contemplate our forms and their meanings to us personally – you can even to go abstract if there are personal symbols you relate to. Gina will bring the two forms; a variety of rusty items\, plaster cloth\, decorative papers\, Encaustic Medium and pigments\, oil sticks\, oil pastels\, mark making pens and pencils\, and tools. \nBeginners are welcome\, and if you have prior experience with Encaustic you can enhance your skills and go to a new level with your work! Gina will cover safety and basics of Encaustics as needed for all participants.

SUMMARY:Encaustic 3D Playing House: Moldmaking\, Wax and Found Objects with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Come play house with me! We’ll start with scrap wood cut into rough house shapes and then embellish them with collage\, chalk paint\, found objects\, and your own cast materials. We’ll layer them with wax-based encaustic paint for even more texture\, and add on any final touches to create whimsical\, one-of-a-kind creative homes! Students will learn not only mold-making and basic casting\, but also how to use scrap wood as a starting point for encaustic. I can guarantee that each student will have the opportunity to work on at least two houses\, but based on the scrap wood in my shed\, we should be able to do make even more! \nBring your favorite found objects and bits of nature\, and you’ll learn tips and tricks to make reusable molds that capture intricate detail and then learn to successfully cast them using different materials – including encaustic-friendly paper clay. You’ll also learn different methods for incorporating your cast objects into your encaustic pieces! Shells\, small metal objects\, little fossils\, and even pine cones work well. \nEnough mold-making material is included in the class for you to make molds of 3-5 objects that average 2” square in size – and you’ll have access to enough casting material to make multiple casts from each mold. And yes – not only will you be able to cast multiple items with your molds\, you’ll take the molds home with you to use again and again.

SUMMARY:The Color of Air
DESCRIPTION:Mark Bettis gallery announces a new art show featuring Asheville artist Nabil El Jaouhari\, beginning on June 8\, 2024\, at Bettis’ River Arts Gallery. This new collection of work by Nabil El Jaouhari consists of paintings and 3D work using air’s elemental\, emotional and conceptual nature. The exhibit explores the extensive and intensive limits of the force through its various forms. It relies on the literal forms air takes\, from the calm to the violent\, to inform the physical presence of the pieces. Using wood burning\, collage\, and air brush\, Nabil creates abstract images on back-lit\, frame-less pieces. As a result\, the pieces have a floating physical presence imitating air. \nNabil describes his show as “the metaphorical and emotional connotations of air that are present\, the calm of a warm breeze\, the violence of a storm\, the winds of change; these temporary and un-graspable shapes form from the always present substance that surrounds us. Only when it is condensed and abstracted from the totality are we reminded that air is always there.” \n“The Color of Air” exhibition will run from June 8th\, 2024\, through June 22nd\, 2024 at the Mark Bettis Gallery located at 123 Roberts Street\, Asheville\, NC. The gallery will be hosting an opening night reception on Saturday June 8th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. All works will be available for purchase. \nOriginally from Lebanon\, Nabil studied fine arts at the Lebanese University in Beirut before moving to the United States in 2009 to complete his MFA in painting and printmaking at the University of Missouri.

SUMMARY:Sumi-e Traditional Japanese Brush Painting
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 11th – 10 AM to 2 PM- $135 – All materials included! \nEnjoy an introduction to the traditional practice of Japanese ink painting called Sumi-e! You will learn how to prepare the ink for painting\, how to correctly use the Sumi brush\, and how to practice traditional movements and brushstrokes. In addition to this\, Diana will teach what types of papers to use for this beautiful art form. There will be plenty of time for practicing the techniques\, and you will create beautiful pieces that can be framed and displayed. \nThe beauty of this simplistic style of painting are the fundamental brush strokes of lines and dots. These techniques are centuries old and have been handed down from one master Sumi teacher to another. Sumi-e is a wonderful discipline that is very relaxing\, and provides an artistic escape from our everyday hectic world.

SUMMARY:Pan Pastel Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Friday June 14th (10am to 4pm) and Saturday Julne15th (1pm to 5pm) – $225 – All materials included! \nLearn about this fun and versatile pastel medium! \nIn this new class from portrait artist Lorelle Bacon\, students will learn how to blend different shades of black and white pan pastels\, while completing a step-by-step pastel portrait. \nIn the first day of instruction\, Lorelle will show students how to lay in the first layer with a focus on values\, and then moving on to refine the portrait and add in fine details. This is a good way to learn how to handle pan pastels\, before investing in a variety of colors. \nOn the second day\, once you are more comfortable with the process\, we will move forward and apply what you learned to two more portraits; the first containing more wrinkles and planes and then a portrait of a child\, which is harder than a man or a woman! Creating very subtle shape and form takes time and patience. You will learn to create smooth skin using subtle value changes – and if you struggle with values\, this is the class for you!
