SUMMARY:Encaustic 3D Playing House: Moldmaking\, Wax and Found Objects with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Come play house with me! We’ll start with scrap wood cut into rough house shapes and then embellish them with collage\, chalk paint\, found objects\, and your own cast materials. We’ll layer them with wax-based encaustic paint for even more texture\, and add on any final touches to create whimsical\, one-of-a-kind creative homes! Students will learn not only mold-making and basic casting\, but also how to use scrap wood as a starting point for encaustic. I can guarantee that each student will have the opportunity to work on at least two houses\, but based on the scrap wood in my shed\, we should be able to do make even more! \nBring your favorite found objects and bits of nature\, and you’ll learn tips and tricks to make reusable molds that capture intricate detail and then learn to successfully cast them using different materials – including encaustic-friendly paper clay. You’ll also learn different methods for incorporating your cast objects into your encaustic pieces! Shells\, small metal objects\, little fossils\, and even pine cones work well. \nEnough mold-making material is included in the class for you to make molds of 3-5 objects that average 2” square in size – and you’ll have access to enough casting material to make multiple casts from each mold. And yes – not only will you be able to cast multiple items with your molds\, you’ll take the molds home with you to use again and again.

DESCRIPTION:Sara Moser’s oil paintings of places\, things and creatures will be the focus of this months Second Saturday at Riverside Studios. Sara’s painting “Letting Go” is inspired by the miracle of a butterfly emerging. The emergence of a butterfly is a journey through Metamorphosis\, a transformation in four stages\, egg\, larva\, pupa and finally a butterfly. \nOur beautiful old building\, located on the corner of West Haywood Street and Riverside Drive\, dates back to the 1890’s and has its origin in the early industrial days of the River Arts District.

Dave Halstead (drums) was onstage playing jazz for some of the greatest names in the genre at 15 years old in New York. Since then he has appeared on countless recordings and stages playing everything from jazz to country to rock. Gary Davis (upright and electric bass; vocals) is also a veteran of many years on stages across the US from the Opry Stage to opening for acts such as the Little River Band\, Big Head Todd and many others.

SUMMARY:The Color of Air
DESCRIPTION:Mark Bettis gallery announces a new art show featuring Asheville artist Nabil El Jaouhari\, beginning on June 8\, 2024\, at Bettis’ River Arts Gallery. This new collection of work by Nabil El Jaouhari consists of paintings and 3D work using air’s elemental\, emotional and conceptual nature. The exhibit explores the extensive and intensive limits of the force through its various forms. It relies on the literal forms air takes\, from the calm to the violent\, to inform the physical presence of the pieces. Using wood burning\, collage\, and air brush\, Nabil creates abstract images on back-lit\, frame-less pieces. As a result\, the pieces have a floating physical presence imitating air. \nNabil describes his show as “the metaphorical and emotional connotations of air that are present\, the calm of a warm breeze\, the violence of a storm\, the winds of change; these temporary and un-graspable shapes form from the always present substance that surrounds us. Only when it is condensed and abstracted from the totality are we reminded that air is always there.” \n“The Color of Air” exhibition will run from June 8th\, 2024\, through June 22nd\, 2024 at the Mark Bettis Gallery located at 123 Roberts Street\, Asheville\, NC. The gallery will be hosting an opening night reception on Saturday June 8th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. All works will be available for purchase. \nOriginally from Lebanon\, Nabil studied fine arts at the Lebanese University in Beirut before moving to the United States in 2009 to complete his MFA in painting and printmaking at the University of Missouri.

DESCRIPTION:FULL CIRCLE\, Conversations in Art and Poetry\, Exhibition by Ginger Graziano \nAbout the Artist: New York City native Ginger Graziano reached a point where she knew she had graduated from her chaotic life as a single mother raising two children while working as a design director for children’s educational publishing in Manhattan. She kept asking herself “where are all the trees?” She had a vision of where she would move to and searched America until she came to Asheville\, North Carolina twenty-three years ago and took a hike. As she turned around on the top of Lookout Mountain\, she said “here they are.” Her life as a painter\, published author\, and graphic designer blossomed. Her show focuses on paintings both evocative of our human journey and weirdly playful. A selection of her published poems will accompany her paintings. \nArtist Statement: My art invites mystery to emerge. I work with image and symbols in mixed media\, primarily acrylic\, pastel\, gesso\, ink and crayon on high-quality paper. Color is an important element. My work is a combination of figurative and abstract. My subjects are frequently women or groups of people\, the focus being emotional and spiritual. Nature speaks to me—the seasons of birth\, growth\, and death. New life returns\, bringing continuity\, forming a circle—a recurring image in my paintings.

In this hands-on session\, you’ll select a gemstone of your choice and learn a fundamental wire wrap. This wrap can be used on different shape stones and altered/embellished to your style. Rebecca will demonstrate and then walk you through each step. You’ll also delve into the essential tools\, types of wire and some stone basics. This beginner level class is open to ages 13 and up. Have you tried it\, but been frustrated by a muddy mess? Come learn the ins and outs of working acrylics in this fun way and get in the flow! We will cover different pouring mediums\, paint mixing and consistency\, different techniques for applying and moving paint\, curing and sealing your work\, troubleshooting\, and more! \nThis class will also have many demos and\, of course\, play time for you to create your own pieces to take home. You should also pack a snack or lunch\, as we will take a lunch break about half-way through. All materials will be provided.
