SUMMARY:Nettle Ink Plant Pigment Workshop with Annie Kyla
DESCRIPTION:July 27th\, 12-2:30 pm. \n191 Lyman St\, #320\, Asheville NC. \nAll supplies included. \nLearn the basics of plant ink-making in this 2.5 hour workshop using methods that can be replicated in the home kitchen with a variety of plants. We will brew an earthy muted green ink together using foraged nettle leaves\, a sustainable pigment source\, and explore painting and drawing with our new plant ink. We will discuss ways to adjust the color\, viscosity\, stability\, and other qualities of the ink. Additional artist-made inks will be available for experimentation\, including marigold\, avocado\, black walnut\, rose\, and more. We will explore a variety of mark making and ink painting with drawing tools such as fountain pens\, glass pens\, calligraphy and watercolor brushes\, and more. Tips and techniques specific to plant ink work will be shared\, as well as a general exploration of ink drawing and painting techniques. \nEach participant will leave with new knowledge and experience with plant pigments and ink making\, as well as a bottle of freshly prepared nettle ink\, a recipe card to aid in creating future ink making endeavors\, a nettle ink value scale for reference\, and their paintings and drawings created during the class. \nAdditional plant inks will be available for purchase\, as well as discounted signups for future plant ink workshops. \n-NOTAFLOF- email annie@artgardenavl.com for sliding scale or work trade tickets. \nArtist Instructor: Annie Kyla Bennett \nAnnie has been creating art with plants since childhood. They began exploring with plant pigments and pressings in 2005 as part of their thesis project in art school\, and continued experimenting with natural pigments while earning a degree in Chemistry. Annie really started honing in on the science of plant ink brewing in 2019 when their passion for foraging reignited an interest in plant pigments\, inspiring Annie to perfect their own ink recipes with local\, sustainably foragable plants. \nAnnie is a painter and mixed media artist whose studio can be found in The Canopy. They love to explore new media\, and work primarily in botanical and earth pigments\, oil paint\, and found object sculpture. They are a co-founder of Art Garden AVL\, and the current Vice President ii of the River Arts District Artists Association. Annie is passionate about plants\, mutual aid\, and artist empowerment. \nhttp://anniekylabennettart.com \nVenue: The Canopy at Art Garden \nThe Canopy is the second floor of Art Garden AVL. The workshop space is peaceful and airy; with high industrial ceilings and a huge skylight\, filled with live plants and large paintings\, and endless inspiration. Gentle smells of lavender and chocolate waft from the adaptogenic Mushroom Cafe\, while artists create in 10 working studios\, and exhibit in 2 gallery spaces\, all connected to the workshop classroom. \nThere is plenty of off-street parking\, a coffee and fresh juice beverage cafe located in the Canopy\, and a farm-to-table lunch cafe located in the south end of the building. \nLocated on the French Broad River\, on the north end of Riverview Station\, at 191 Lyman St\, #320\, Asheville NC\, on the second floor above 310 Art. In the River Arts District\, and on the Greenway.

SUMMARY:COLLAGE: CUT PASTE AND CREATE! with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Go beyond the vision board and stretch your creative muscles in this collage class! \nCollage is my way of journaling and it’s the foundation of most of my work. Join me in exploring collage as both a fine art medium and a path of self-expression. \nYou’ll come away with a sense for what combination of glue and surface works best with your own style\, how to use collage to spark your creativity\, and ways of bringing your own imagery and mark-making into your collages. We’ll also discuss what makes a successful collage composition\, how to manage issues of copyright\, and ways of sealing and displaying your final works. \nWe’ll cover all the basics – the advantages of different adhesives\, sourcing and organizing materials\, various substrates\, and the elements of composition. We’ll start the day with a series of creative warm-up collages while exploring cut-and-paste as a tool for accessing our authentic intuitive voice. \nOver the course of the day\, students will have the opportunity to modify found papers using paints and inks to create their own collage fodder. Over the course of the class\, students will create multiple collages with different glues and on different substrates. If there’s time and interest\, I’ll even demonstrate a simple image transfer technique using packing tape!

SUMMARY:VINTAGE PHOTO EFFECTS IN ENCAUSTIC with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 14th – 10 AM to 5 PM- $165 – All materials included! \nThis workshop is a great introduction to one way of working with black and white photography and encaustic. Bridget will share her favorite method for mounting photographs on cradled wood panels\, as well as how she layers colored pencil\, encaustic medium\, oil paint or oil sticks\, and pan pastels to enhance the images. The effect can be a like a wonderful\, vintage\, hand-tinted photograph! Add collage elements and stencil encaustic paint directly into the encaustic\, and the results can be quirky and much more modern. \nStudents will have an opportunity to work with two images\, one sized for an 8×8 panel and one sized for an 8×10 panel. Students will be able to choose from a variety of black and white “found ancestor” portraits\, still lives\, and more. For an extra fee\, students with digital photo experience can send two images to Bridget at least one week before class for formatting and printing. \nStudents will come away with a minimum of two completed pieces\, as well as information on how to print and work with their own images to create “encaustic photo effects” in their own home studios. Participants will also receive basic instruction on safety and as well as techniques for working with encaustic medium and encaustic collage.

SUMMARY:Embrace the Journey - Anatolii Tarasiuk opening reception
DESCRIPTION:About the Artist: \nAnatolii Tarasiuk is an abstract artist\, composer and videographer born in Ukraine in 1978. When he was 11 years of age\, he became a pantomime actor in a professional theater. He started to paint when he was 15 years old and is a self-taught artist. In July of 2022\, his family (wife and 3 sons) relocated from Kiev\, Ukraine to the USA. Today he lives and continues his art in the triangle area of North Carolina. \nArtist Statement: \nTarasiuk’s art style is abstract expressionism with lots of color. He likes to use a palette knife because it draws more on spontaneity and pushes him beyond all that is known. He never has a plan or image in mind for the work when he starts. He lets whatever comes out flow\, without judgment\, and keeps creating until it is the heart and not the mind that finally tells him that a piece is done. His biggest inspiration is the vision of his art giving feelings of joy and hope to each viewer. \n  \nExhibition title: Embrace the Journey \nArtist: Anatolii Tarasiuk \nExhibition dates: August 23–Sept. 22\, 2024 \nOpening reception: Friday\, August 23\, 2024\, 5:00-8:00pm \nLocation: Pink Dog Gallery\, 348 Depot St.\, Asheville\, NC\, 28801\, River Arts District
