SUMMARY:Who am I\, Who are We? "The Vortex" Open House at Riverside Studios
DESCRIPTION:Crawford Haase’s oil paintings will be the focus of this months Second Saturday at Riverside Studios. Crawford’s painting “Guelaguetza Dancers” is inspired by the dancers from the Oaxaca regions of Mexico. \nThese dancers not only move the air\, but also our hearts. We are drawn in by their colorful costumes and their graceful movements. The word Guelaguetza means gift or offering\, and every year the Guelaguetza Festival celebrates the maize goddess. \nOur beautiful building located on the corner of West Haywood Street and Riverside Drive\, dates back to the 1890’s and has its origin in the early industrial days of the River Arts District.

SUMMARY:FLOW
DESCRIPTION:Mark Bettis Gallery announces a new art show featuring Asheville artist David Sheldon\, beginning September 14th\, 2024\, at Bettis’ River Arts District Asheville gallery. This showcase\, titled “FLOW”\, speaks to the human desire for life itself to unfold with a consistent\, yet dynamic range of unfolding events. \n“FLOW”\, exhibition will run from Sept 14th\, 2024\, through Sept 28th\, 2024 at the Mark Bettis River Arts District Gallery located at 123 Roberts St. Asheville\, NC. The gallery is hosting an opening night reception on Saturday\, September 14th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. All works will be available for purchase. \nDavid Sheldon explains\, “Flow” is defined as a ‘steady\, continuous stream’. Whether it’s the languorous meanderings of a lazy river\, or the pulsing\, thunderous cascade of a mountain waterfall\, there’s an allure to the idea of ‘steady stream’. As a metaphor\, it speaks to the human desire for life itself to unfold with a consistent\, yet dynamic range of unfolding events. Yet\, life as we all know\, is anything but predictable. The one constant\, as they say\, is change. Flow\, when it occurs as a welcome\, steady stream of good fortune and well-being does wonders for the human psyche. Artist\, David Sheldon sees the artistic\, creative process in that light. The flow in the process of painting and sculpture\, whether it’s incorporated into the depiction of a beautiful\, meandering river\, or the weaving of disparate elements in an abstract sculpture\, can be a ‘means to an end’ allowing the artist to experience and express a full range of ideas and emotions. One aspect of the creative process is ‘removing oneself’ and allowing the process itself to flow in the way it’s meant to – so there’s an undeniable humbling aspect to letting things flow in creating. The exhibition presents the Artist’s latest works that speak to the process of “Flow” \nDavid Sheldon received a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1984\, which included a formative year spent painting in Rome\, Italy\, as part of RISD’s European Honors Program. As a grad student\, Sheldon brought sculpture into the mix. His thesis show for his MFA in 1990\, at the University of Maryland\, incorporated large-scale\, mixed-media paintings\, as well as sculptural works. \nSheldon continues to create cutting-edge sculptural works in metal\, as well as provocative public art. Modernist sculpture\, with its emphasis on the dynamics of form and space\, continues to be a major influence in his work. Sheldon endeavors to create what he calls “spatial music”.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Pysanky Egg Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pysanky are a lot like Asheville- unique\, fun and colorful! \nIn this workshop we will be making beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky. You will learn the method of batik – also called wax-resist – dying. You will also be familiarized with the wide range of Ukrainian folk art traditional patterns\, designs and symbols and their history. The designs are made with beeswax which is melted in the flame of a candle and applied to the egg using a tool called a kistka. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes. At the end of the process the beeswax is melted off to reveal the beautiful and colorful design. You may use the traditional patterns\, or also freestyle and make up your own design. Pysanky are fun\, relaxing\, and meditative to create. And\, the symbols are all good wishes\, so it is always the perfect time to create eggs with symbols wishing for good health\, long life\, strength and protection and other good things. \nCall\, text or email me to reserve a spot\, or schedule your own afternoon or evening date for you and your friends! Lessons available at my studio or your location for individuals and groups- many weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons work well. Classes are 3 hours and use of all supplies is included. Most people create 1 to 2 pysanky which you take home with you. $75 per person (cash/check) or $78 (credit card) includes use of all supplies. Please contact me for more information or to sign up!  andreakulish [at] gmail dot com or 828.423.6459.

SUMMARY:VINTAGE PHOTO EFFECTS IN ENCAUSTIC with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Oct 3rd – 10 AM to 5 PM- $165 – All materials included! \nThis workshop is a great introduction to one way of working with black and white photography and encaustic. Bridget will share her favorite method for mounting photographs on cradled wood panels\, as well as how she layers colored pencil\, encaustic medium\, oil paint or oil sticks\, and pan pastels to enhance the images. The effect can be a like a wonderful\, vintage\, hand-tinted photograph! Add collage elements and stencil encaustic paint directly into the encaustic\, and the results can be quirky and much more modern. \nStudents will have an opportunity to work with two images\, one sized for an 8×8 panel and one sized for an 8×10 panel. Students will be able to choose from a variety of black and white “found ancestor” portraits\, still lives\, and more. For an extra fee\, students with digital photo experience can send two images to Bridget at least one week before class for formatting and printing. \nStudents will come away with a minimum of two completed pieces\, as well as information on how to print and work with their own images to create “encaustic photo effects” in their own home studios. Participants will also receive basic instruction on safety and as well as techniques for working with encaustic medium and encaustic collage.

SUMMARY:Layers of Meaning: Encaustic and Collage with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Saturday October 5th (10am to 5pm) and Sunday October 6th (12pm to 4pm) – $345 – All materials included\, but please see below. \nEncaustic is wonderful for collage because of the ability to build up translucent layers\, remove and reposition elements\, and create dreamy compositions! In this course\, we explore different ways of building up those layers in encaustic and mixed media as well as working in a series and working on multiple panels at once. We’ll be working with papers\, images\, wax-friendly mixed media materials\, and even dimensional objects. This beginner-friendly class offers both new and experienced students a formula for developing their encaustic paintings and is a great way to understand “thinking in layers.” And I cover topics not included in my encaustic comprehensive – including materials you can use on the panel BEFORE you add wax and incorporating dimensional elements like keys\, rocks\, or costume jewelry into your work. \nOn the first day\, students will start with four 8×8 cradled panels and will begin by intuitively creating backgrounds using encaustic-friendly paint\, glue\, and collage materials directly on the panels. Next\, we’ll add layers of clear encaustic medium and start to develop the composition and establish a focal point by adding in layers of both translucent and opaque encaustic paints\, collage\, and image transfer – all while working to both conceal and reveal the background layer. Students will be encouraged to work on all four panels at once\, developing works that (might possibly) feel related. \nOn the second day\, we’ll cover multiple techniques for adding dimensional objects – this includes everything from buttons and seedpods to branches and matchbox cars. I’ll also cover adding some mixed media elements like oil sticks and pan pastels to highlight elements of the piece.

SUMMARY:The Totem: Family\, Spirit and Culture Artists explore and interpret this ancient custom.
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Saturday\, November 2\, 2024\, 5-7pm at the gallery.\nArtist talk at 5:30. \nIn this exhibition\, twelve artists reinterpret the concept of totems\, exploring themes of family\, spirit\, and culture. Most pieces adheres to a 72″ x 9″ format\, echoing traditional totem shapes while allowing for diverse artistic expressions.\nTotems have long symbolized connections between people\, nature\, and ideas. Our artists draw on this rich history\, presenting works that reflect on identity\, heritage\, and community in contemporary contexts.\nThrough various mediums and styles\, these modern totems invite viewers to contemplate their own connections to family and culture. As you explore the exhibition\, consider how these vertical forms convey personal narratives and universal themes within a shared visual language.

SUMMARY:PAINTING FROM PHOTO REFERENCES with Susan Sinyai
DESCRIPTION:Start with a photo reference…but paint from your heart! This class is great for those with some painting experience wanting to improve skills and techniques! \nPlein Aire painting is wonderful and informative\, and there is no doubt that being out in nature provides inspiration. But what about that ephemeral moment of perfect light that you captured in a photo\, or the place that holds special memories that you can’t get back to. What if you can’t get outside\, or don’t have your painting supplies? \nWell\, guess what\, no worries! Susan is here to teach you how to PAINT FROM A PHOTO REFERENCE! \nIn this workshop students will focus on using one or more references as a tool for inspiration – not unlike the way we would approach painting from life: observe\, find an area of interest\, analyze and design\, and proceed to interpret the scene. The goal is to not slavishly copy what we are seeing\, but to convey the feeling and mood of it. In this workshop we will focus on the landscape. We will explore the many different ways you can unchain yourself from that photograph boldly make some changes to make it into a your own beautiful painting. \nWednesday\, November 5th – 10 AM to 4 PM- $165 – All materials included!\nOils will be provided for class. If you prefer acrylics\, bring your own paints\, substrates and brushes provided for both mediums.

SUMMARY:COLLAGE: CUT PASTE AND CREATE with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Go beyond the vision board and stretch your creative muscles in this collage class! \nCollage is my way of journaling and it’s the foundation of most of my work. Join me in exploring collage as both a fine art medium and a path of self-expression. \nYou’ll come away with a sense for what combination of glue and surface works best with your own style\, how to use collage to spark your creativity\, and ways of bringing your own imagery and mark-making into your collages. We’ll also discuss what makes a successful collage composition\, how to manage issues of copyright\, and ways of sealing and displaying your final works. \nWe’ll cover all the basics – the advantages of different adhesives\, sourcing and organizing materials\, various substrates\, and the elements of composition. We’ll start the day with a series of creative warm-up collages while exploring cut-and-paste as a tool for accessing our authentic intuitive voice. \nOver the course of the day\, students will have the opportunity to modify found papers using paints and inks to create their own collage fodder. Over the course of the class\, students will create multiple collages with different glues and on different substrates. If there’s time and interest\, I’ll even demonstrate a simple image transfer technique using packing tape! \n$155 includes all materials\, but students are encouraged to bring more!
