Students will work in acrylics for convenience of fast drying\, the same principles apply to oils\, watercolor\, encaustic and other mediums. \nThis crash course in color is for aspiring artists with ALL levels of experience in painting! \nDo you want to learn the best tubes of paint to buy and how to work with a limited palette? What does all the information on the paint tubes mean? What are the best uses for transparent and opaque pigments? In this two-session class you will learn how to mix any color you want from just six tubes of paint plus white. Learn the tricks of making hundreds of different greens with only three simple primary colors. Learn to make a rich\, deep black that stands out on your painting. And most importantly\, learn how to save a lot of money using a good basic palette in red\, yellow and blue. \nThis two-week course will be a guided journey into the mysteries of pigments and color: \nWeek one – the color wheel! Create your own reference to guide you in your painting journey! Learn how to mix secondary colors\, tints\, and find just the right color combinations for your paintings. \nWeek two – Going Beyond: how to mix a huge variety of secondary and neutral colors with a limited palette\, lots of discussion and Q&A. Guided steps to continue your learning independently. \nBring a journal and pencil to class. Lots of handouts will be provided for later reference. \nFleta has spent years studying color and composition principles\, including a Master in Studio art teaching with an emphasis on materials and color theory. To make the most of this course\, some outside painting time is suggested but not required. Marvelous Mondays could be a good option for additional class time.

SUMMARY:Between the Two of Us Part II
DESCRIPTION:Artists Mark Bettis and Nabil El Jaouhari are collaborating on a new exhibition that combines Bettis’s paintings with El Jaouhari’s wood burning and collage techniques. This marks their second joint project\, following their previous successful partnership. The exhibition is set to open on June 14th at the Mark Bettis Gallery\, located at 123 Roberts Street in Asheville’s River Arts District. \nNabil El Jaouhari\, originally from Lebanon\, studied fine arts at the Lebanese University in Beirut before completing his MFA in painting and printmaking at the University of Missouri. His work is known for its intricate collages on wooden panels\, integrating elements from his previous oil paintings\, prints\, and studies\, combined with detailed wood burning. This approach reflects themes of destruction and reconstruction\, aiming for reconciliation and recreation. \nMark Bettis\, a prominent figure in Asheville’s art scene\, operates the Mark Bettis Gallery\, which showcases contemporary art from various artists\, including El Jaouhari. The gallery has hosted numerous exhibitions\, such as “The Color of Air” in June 2024\, featuring El Jaouhari’s exploration of air’s elemental and emotional aspects through paintings and 3D works \nThe upcoming exhibition promises a unique fusion of Bettis’s dynamic painting style with El Jaouhari’s textured wood burning and collage techniques. Art enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing this innovative collaboration starting June 14 at the Mark Bettis Gallery. \nThe exhibition will be shown from June 14th through June 28th\, 2025. \nThere will be an opening reception at the gallery on Saturday\, June 14th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm\, refreshments will be served. The artists will be present to meet and talk with guests about their creations. All the works on display will be offered for sale. \nMark Bettis Gallery hours are Monday\, Wednesday\, Thursday 10am to 4pm\, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sundays 12-3pm (Tuesday by appt.). DESCRIPTION:You will learn how to go from an idea to finish piece and go home with your own painted 9×6” pencil/art supply/makeup canvas case! You will learn various ways you can take your doodles from paper and transfer the outline onto fabric. You will learn about supplies that are helpful if you want to directly sketch onto fabric. \nAnd then we paint! Lots of tips and tricks will be shared and all questions are welcome. You will be able to go home and know how to do it all on your own. These make excellent gifts! You will be able to take this knowledge and translate it to other fabrics like denim. \nNo previous experience required. All supplies are provided. However\, if want to bring a specific design or your own doodle\, it will need to fit within the 9×6” area. Even better if its printed on cheap/thin printer paper. Whether it’s your own pet or a wild animal\, capturing the personality and looks that are unique to each animal will be covered in this great 2-day workshop! \nOn the first day\, students will work from Lorelle’s reference and follow along with step-by-step instruction. You will learn to render fur and hair realistically without having to paint every detail. On day two students will paint either from their own pet photo\, or use an animal reference provided by Lorelle of a wild or domesticated animal. You will need some knowledge in painting with either acrylics or oils\, but you will leave with confidence in your ability to depict animals! \nYou do NOT need to know how to draw in order to succeed in this workshop! SUMMARY:Adventures in Collage Book Binding with Mary Alice Ramsey
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 12th and Sunday July 13th (11 AM to 5 PM) – $285 – All Materials included\, but some tools needed (see below) \nThe process of collage presents endless possibilities in book construction. On the first day of this two-day class\, we will incorporate metallic paper\, other cut and torn papers\, and ink to result in collage enclosures for five signatures of folded sheets. \nOn day two\, we will sew five collage-enclosed signatures with a basket-weave spine stitch adding beads\, decorative yarns\, and jewelry findings to embellish. \nEach participant will have access to a variety of patterned fibrous papers. Pens\, inks\, acrylics\, and colored pencils will be shared. \nThese one-of-a-kind books are great as sketchbooks\, journals\, art journals\, special occasion recordings\, or gifts. Get out of your head and into your soul\, play and experiment\, doodle and make a mess\, all while tapping into the creativity we all have inside of us. \nThis course is for artists who want to advance their creative potential and find their artistic voice\, as well as beginners who want to invite art into their lives in a totally fun and non-intimidating way. This workshop aims to ignite a more regular art practice while expanding your creativity! Heather credits her art with saving her from depression after surviving a category 5 hurricane in 2018\, a story she will share in the workshop\, and one that she hopes can help others recover from our recent experiences as well.
