Using Vine\, Willow\, Compressed\, and Charcoal pencils students will test different mark-making techniques on a few different artworks in order to reveal shapes and textures. \nLearn the benefits of wearing a latex-free glove whilst drawing to keep hands clean – your fingers are among the best tools for smearing and softening shadows! There’s even more – Heidi will guide students through the use of soft leather\, smudge sticks\, cotton swabs\, and erasers. Take your learned techniques and tricks home with you to continue your Charcoal journey\, and discover what makes this fantastic medium so expressive and addictive! \nThis class seats 8 students. A signature member of the National Association of Women Artists and a member of the Portrait Society of America\, Heidi brings her enthusiasm for both portraiture and teaching to 310 ART and Asheville’s River Arts District.

DESCRIPTION:Mark Bettis Gallery announces a new art show featuring Molly Jo Burke\, beginning September 13th\, 2025\, at Bettis’ River Arts District Asheville gallery. This showcase\, titled “TERRA FLUXUS”\, Latin for Land Flow\, captures the beauty of earth\, its natural environments and the ebb and flow of movement in natures steady shift using glass and mixed media assemblages. \n“Terra Fluxus”\, exhibition will run from Sept 13th\, 2025\, through Sept 27th\, 2025\, at the Mark Bettis River Arts District Gallery located at 123 Roberts St. Asheville\, NC. The gallery is hosting an opening night reception on Saturday\, September 13th from 4 to 6 pm. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. All works will be available for purchase. \nMolly Jo Burke explains with this recent body of work it is in the movement and flow of the glass colors as they are threaded on to the body of the sculptures and vases\, or creating stacks of glass\, similar to the playful creations of cairns created by carefully arranging and balancing rocks in nature. Highlighting color\, form\, texture and the opportunity to play on moments in natures patterns that are similar between disparate areas. Such as vines tangling and massing\, bursting occasionally with flowers and seeds\, or rock textures with bursts of moss or sediment\, inclusions of transparent and opaque in the stone\, with some moments of disruption made by man-made architecture. \nMolly Jo Burke\, b. 1984\, is a Cincinnati\, Ohio based artist\, educator\, and researcher. Burke received a BFA (2006) from Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD)\, and her MFA (2009)\, and PhD (2024) from The Ohio State University (OSU). She has taught at OSU\, CCAD\, and The Studio at Corning Museum of Glass. Her work has been featured most recently at Toledo Museum of Art\, Columbus Museum of Art\, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, France. \nMark Bettis Gallery hours are Monday\, Wednesday\, Thursday from 10 am to 4pm\, Friday-Saturday 10 am to 5 pm\, Sunday 12 pm to 3 pm and by appointment on Tuesdays. The event marks a joyful return for gallery owner and painter Sandra Bottinelli\, whose previous gallery\, Modern Muse\, was destroyed during the devastating floods of Hurricane Helene in 2024. \nBottinelli Fine Art will showcase eight artists: four Resident Artists\, who maintain working studios within the gallery\, and four Satellite Artists\, who present their work in curated exhibitions. Remarkably\, five of these artists were part of Modern Muse\, carrying forward a legacy of creative community and resilience. DESCRIPTION:In response to the devastation of Helene\, more than two dozen of the region’s finest writers and artists turned to their craft to help our neighbors heal. They published works in a book called Stronger than the Storm: Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. In their poetry\, artwork\, and essays they’ve distilled emotions and events that are far too big to convey in photos or videos. \nNow\, the public is invited to a Resilience Award event\, where the book’s creators honor their pledge to contribute 100% of the book profits to the MANNA local recovery effort. While there are many worthy organizations\, the writers and artists selected MANNA FoodBank\, whose own building on Swannanoa River Road was destroyed by Helene\, to receive the funds . Dedicated MANNA employees and volunteers jumped into action quickly so they could continue to ensure our neighbors wouldn’t go hungry\, especially in this time of great need. The books profits are expected to be enough for MANNA to supply 20\,000 meals. \nThe event will be held at Jaime Byrd Contemporary Art Gallery in the River Arts District who also suffered catastrophic flooding and destruction from the storm\, yet has now since been rebuilt. This beautiful open 2000 square foot gallery is inviting all to celebrate the work MANNA FoodBank does done for our community. This will also be a perfect opportunity to meet some of the artists\, writers\, and editors of the book\, all of whom were impacted by the storm. \nThere will be light snacks and drinks.
