SUMMARY:Ukrainian Pysanky egg ornament workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pysanky are a lot like Asheville- unique\, fun and colorful!\n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will be making beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky- into holiday ornaments. You will learn the method of batik – also called wax-resist – dying. You will also be familiarized with the wide range of Ukrainian folk art traditional patterns\, designs and symbols and their history. The designs are made with beeswax which is melted in the flame of a candle and applied to the egg using a tool called a kistka. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes. At the end of the process the beeswax is melted off to reveal the beautiful and colorful design. You may use the traditional patterns\, or also freestyle and make up your own design. Pysanky are fun\, relaxing\, and meditative to create. DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in narrating your travel adventures with watercolor & ink sketching and journaling\, this is the class for you.\nDuring this 6 hour workshop\, we will explore techniques\, layouts and steps for beginning a watercolor travel sketchbook.\nI will be providing a small good quality watercolor sketchbook for each student to keep\, and the use of my watercolor travel paint sets\, paintbrushes\, spray bottles\, paper towels pencils and erasers. This way each student can experiment with my materials to see what they may want in future.\nStudents will only need to bring their lunch or purchase it at a nearby restaurant. We will have a 1/2 hour lunch break.

SUMMARY:Pyrography – Wood Burning with Chalkley Matlack
DESCRIPTION:All levels. Adults and children 12+ with adult supervision. \nThis workshop will teach you the basic safety and techniques to begin your journey with pyrography. The woodburning tool will feel cumbersome at first\, but the lesson at the first half of the workshop will help you understand the different ways to utilize factors like angles\, speed\, and pressure to get the desired effect with the tool. After some practice\, in the second half of the class you will create a piece of art on a beautiful piece of bass wood. DESCRIPTION:In this class we will cover a variety of mediums\, such as watercolor\, oil and acrylic\, focus on creating depth and form through the strategic use of value\, color\, and atmospheric perspective. You will learn to see and paint trees as masses of light and shadow rather than individual leaves\, focusing on techniques like blocking in large value shapes\, layering colors\, and creating texture. You will learn how to mix and apply a variety of greens to create realism by the use of both cool and warm shadows.  We will go over the use of different brushstrokes to create foliage and branches\, and refining shapes with details like “sky holes” for realism.

SUMMARY:ColorScapes ~ Acrylic Painting Workshop with guest artist Tania Dirks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this colorful full-day workshop\, focusing on technique with acrylic painting\,  layering and color theory.  If you know Colorscape artist Tania Dirks\, you understand that her classes are an energetic mix of laughter and color\, coupled with lots of support and guidance with new painting techniques. If you don’t know her yet\, you are in for a treat! \nIn this beginning-level workshop\, you’ll begin with some mini warmups -on small canvas boards and mixing demos. Followed by a focused Colorscape painting on 11”x14” canvas. (see “student painting” images for reference). You will be supported throughout the day in learning color mixing strategies and combos\, by understanding how color theory works.  \nTania will have you get familiar with how to gracefully blend colors or add in bold paint applications \, mixing and matching with a palette knife technique and using color theory of complimenting colors while recognizing what colors are warm or cool and lastly how to use this color control to evoke emotion in your artwork! \nAll paint supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring your favorite brushes and palette knife if you have it\, Tania will let you borrow her basic tools. \nMaterials are included with your registration\, and there will be a break for you to take lunch around 12:30. There are cafes around the corner and a fridge at the studio if you prefer to bring your lunch.

DESCRIPTION:Get your hands inky and explore the beauty of imperfection with spontaneous mark making\, textured layers\, motifs and playful experimentation – rooted in the Wabi Sabi approach to Mono Printing\, celebrating the beauty of the unrepeatable. \nClasses explore a variety of techniques and materials for creating monoprints. Students will learn to use a gel plate\, brayer\, stencils\, rice paper\, textures\, paints\, and more. \nYou will have use of 1 5″x7″ Gelli mono printing plate\, inking plate\, brayer\, acrylic and ink\, a variety of papers to print on\, mylar stencils. and rubber stamps. \nStudents bring gloves if desired\, beverage and lunch.
