You will also have the option to stay (without our teachers present) in our classroom until 4pm to continue work on your projects.

SUMMARY:Intro to Mosaics Class
DESCRIPTION:Join Linda Girardi from Elemental Art in making mosaic art for your home. You will create at least two mosaic coasters or one trivet using color blocking with a large selection of stain glass tiles. All tools and materials will be provided. You will learn about substrates\, adhesives\, and grouts. You will design and place your tiles in class. Because the pieces must cure for 24 hours\, you will be given all the materials and instructions you need to grout your pieces at home. Or you are welcome to come back to the studio to finish your pieces or have Linda grout them for you. This workshop is appropriate for both adults and young adults (ages 13 and older).

SUMMARY:Exploring Color and Form in Abstract Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:These workshops are designed for painters who want to experiment with subjective colors and arbitrary forms when painting a landscape. We will complete several exercises focusing on composition\, visual movement and the illusion of aerial perspective. Emphasis will be on ‘freeing up’ your creative process and painting with subjective colors. Because each workshop is limited to five students there will be plenty of individual attention. Canvases\, brushes\, palette knives\, oil paints and solvents will be provided. You are welcome to bring acrylics if you prefer.

SUMMARY:Colored Pencil Magic with Lorelle Bacon
DESCRIPTION:Colored pencils are an under-appreciated medium! If used correctly\, they can even look like an oil painting\, and are great for those of us that like to have control and realism in our art. \nStudents will learn about the best kind of pencils to use\, and the kinds of papers you can use them on. We will be creating two small still life drawings. One will be to learn how to render cut glass (a valuable technique!) and the other one will be to learn to create the look of real metal. \nNo experience is necessary for this workshop. It is great for beginners through advance students. Lorelle is known for her patience and has taught thousands of students over the years. Bring a paper and pen for note taking.

SUMMARY:Who Am I? Who Are We? “Cycle of Life” Exhibit Opening at Riverside Studios
DESCRIPTION:Mary Bryson’s paintings in oil will be the focus of this month’s Second Saturday at Riverside Studios. Mary’s painting “Sacred Lotus Cycle” is inspired by the life cycle of the Lotus. \nPerennial lotuses are native to temperate zones\, like Asheville\, NC. Lotus seeds germinate in the mud\, usually at the bottom of bodies of water. A tiny seedling will emerge from the seed coat and roots will start to grow down into the mud. Plants produce flowers\, which both rise and bloom\, unscathed\, above the water\, symbolizing hope\, rebirth\, strength\, and resilience. Lotus flowers produce heat to attract beetles\, its main pollinator\, that feed on nectar. The flowers also release a scent that signals to these insects there is food available. When a beetle lands on the flower\, it brushes against the stigma\, picking up pollen in the process. After pollination\, a seed pod forms in the center of the flower and the petals fall away. The pod will grow and turn brown as it matures. Eventually\, the pod will split open to release hundreds of seeds. Most of these seeds will be eaten by other aquatic organisms\, but some will be carried away by the current and eventually take root in a new location survive to begin the cycle anew. \nOur beautiful old building\, located on the corner of West Haywood Street and Riverside Drive\, dates back to the 1890’s and has its origin in the early industrial days of the River Arts District.

For this edition of Second Saturday\, Nara will be doing a live pinning of a few dozen butterflies and moths. You’ll get to see how fascinating these beauties are and why so many people are obsessed with them! Everyone is welcome to come by\, ask questions and share this passion with Nara. DESCRIPTION:Bring your Sketchbooks! \nJoin Harper Leich in The Goldenrod Studio in The Canopy at Art Garden AVL for this workshop! \nThis 3 hour course is open to anyone with a sketchbook who wants to play together! \nIn this workshop together\, we’re going to explore ways to embellish the drawings and paintings and ink washes (or whatever!) that you already have in your sketchbook as a way to bring more depth and playfulness to the pages. We’ll also talk about how adding journaling into our art can be a really great way to record our experiences while adding visual interest. \nIf you don’t already have a sketchbook full of drawings or paintings to embellish\, you are still welcome! You can work on a page in class\, employing some of the techniques we will cover. \nAt the beginning\, I will show some examples of adding embellishments within my own sketchbook. I will then demo gold leaf technique\, rainbow ink wash\, and introduce materials. \nI will supply: Gold Leaf and adhesive\, vintage books and contemporary magazines for collage material (plus adhesive)\, watercolor inks for washes\, acrylic paint markers\, glitter paint\, and glitter\, colored pencils\, etc. \nAfter the demo period\, we’ll work independently together on our pages. DESCRIPTION:Embroider your clothes! \nJoin Harper Leich in The Goldenrod Studio in The Canopy at Art Garden AVL for this upcoming embroidery workshop! \nIn this class\, we’ll go over the basics of the art of embroidery. We’ll learn about technique and 2 simple stitches\, then we will design our look\, and embroider on our items of clothing! Wearable art featuring your unique designs and style is a very fun and easy way to show your creativity to the world. \nEmbroidery looks awesome on any non-stretchy materials (think denim\, linen\, broadcloth\, canvas\, shirting\, quilting cotton\, etc.). SUMMARY:Vintage Photo Effects In Encaustic with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a great introduction to one way of working with black and white photography and encaustic. Bridget will share her favorite method for mounting photographs on cradled wood panels\, as well as how she layers colored pencil\, encaustic medium\, oil paint or oil sticks\, and pan pastels to enhance the images. The effect can be a like a wonderful\, vintage\, hand-tinted photograph! Add collage elements and stencil encaustic paint directly into the encaustic\, and the results can be quirky and much more modern. \nStudents will have an opportunity to work with two images\, one sized for an 8×8 panel and one sized for an 8×10 panel. Students will be able to choose from a variety of black and white “found ancestor” portraits\, still lives\, and more. For an extra fee\, students with digital photo experience can send two images to Bridget at least one week before class for formatting and printing. \nStudents will come away with a minimum of two completed pieces\, as well as information on how to print and work with their own images to create “encaustic photo effects” in their own home studios. Participants will also receive basic instruction on safety and as well as techniques for working with encaustic medium and encaustic collage.
