In recent years, political and social tensions in the United States have intensified, leaving many Americans concerned about democracy, economic inequality, human rights, and the nation’s role in global conflicts. Artists across the country have responded by creating works that reflect on these challenges and the search for a more just and compassionate society.
In conjunction with the nationwide “Fall of Freedom” artist project, Common Ground Rising brings together artists from western North Carolina whose work addresses contemporary political, domestic, and international issues. Featuring a wide range of artistic styles and media, the exhibition presents deeply personal and thought-provoking responses to the current moment.
The artworks in Common Ground Rising range from subtle and reflective to confrontational and urgent, while also offering moments of resilience and hope. Together, they invite viewers to engage in dialogue about the divisions and shared values shaping American life today. Skip Rohde, an Asheville artist and one of the curators of this exhibition, noted “Artists have a lot to say about our world, and we have a lot of ways to say it.”
Common Ground Rising runs from July 20 to August 14 at Pink Dog Creative at 348 Depot Street in Asheville’s River Arts District. An opening reception will be held Friday, July 24, from 5–7 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet participating artists and discuss the ideas behind their work.
