July 27, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
$255Artist Bridget Benton is well known for the way she incorporates images of nature into her mixed-media art. In this two-day class, she will share her passion for the beauty of the natural world and show you how she prints directly from botanicals using gelli plates, non-toxic inks, and even light-sensitive fabrics. Whether you’re a fiber artist, paper artist, book maker, mixed-media art explorer, or just love plants, there’s something in this class for you!
On the first day, students will have the opportunity to print on a variety of papers, fabrics, and even mylar. The focus will be on printing from nature, but the class will also explore using stencils, stamps, and other textural tools to get fantastic detail and unique effects from ink and gelli plates.
On the second day, you’ll have an opportunity to print with light! We’ll be printing on light-sensitive papers and fabrics using natural objects and sunlight. After a day and a half of printmaking, you’ll have a tremendous array of imagery! Some of what you’ve created will be stunning all on its own, and some of it may come to life as part of a larger collage.
The culmination of the class will be using your materials to create an 8”x 8” to 12”x 12” mixed media art piece! You’ll learn ways of combining paper and fabric using adhesives as well as tricks for using wire and brads to add three dimensional found objects.
All materials will be provided – you can just show up and have fun! – but students are encouraged to bring their own plant materials and found natural objects for printmaking and inclusion in their final mixed media art piece. Students will also be asked prior to the class if their focus is paper or fiber.
$225 includes two days of instruction and all materials – use of printing plates, inks, and a variety of surfaces to print on – including Japanese papers, printmaking papers, vintage book pages, muslin, and mylar, as well as light-sensitive fabrics. Students will also get a cradled wood panel and access to tools and materials to use for their final mixed media composition.
Bridget Benton has years of experience making art from plants and is excited to share this cornucopia of techniques with you! She served as an education coordinator for the Nature Printing Society, an international organization dedicated to creating art from nature, from 2016-2018, and is 310 Art’s lead Nature Printing and Encaustic Instructor.
