This show brings together 18 glass artists to create representations of the geometry of nature and its symmetry that both thrill and mystify artists, scientists, and laymen alike. The beautiful symmetry of nature has been a muse for artists for millennia. This show is about how we, as artists, see and represent that natural symmetry and the underlying math found in both living and nonliving parts of the natural world. From the complex spirals of shells to the fractal patterns of the Romanesco Broccoli to the subtle helix of a strand of DNA geometry can be seen everywhere.
“Nature is sometimes described as magic because of the seemingly impossible symmetry and natural geometry found within it. As we wonder at its beauty and complexity of natural forms, we are somehow additionally mystified by the complex geometry in its nature. In a similar way, mathematicians look at complex mathematical formulas and feel awe and excitement with the possibilities those formulas represent in the world,” Kim Self, Curator.
