Kyle Carpenter

Picture
As a contemporary potter, I often look to past traditions for inspiration. I’m interested in folk pottery of many origins. My native state of North Carolina, of course, offers a deep well of talented potters, both folk and contemporary, to look towards for inspiration. Simplicity in form offers a broad surface for me to embellish with lines, patterns, and drawings. The combination of three-dimensional forms and two-dimensional drawings was a natural fusion of both my love of drawing and pottery, art and craft. It is my intention to bring together clear and abstract markings to engage the viewer to look closely at how design relates to the form of the pot.

Karen Newgard
Karen Newgard Pottery

Picture
Using scenes and icons from daily life has always been an integral part of my work. The reductive carving method allows me to add movement to the images on the surface of my pots. To further exemplify this notion of lively animation I use the salt firing method to glaze and activate the surface of my pots this promotes subtle color variations in the clay and also glazes the pot. The fire completes the process making each piece a one of a kind.

Monty Phillips
Fancy Dirt Studio and Forge

Picture
My current work is an exercise in fancy exploring the possibilities of vitreous enamel on sterling silver and copper in regard to form, texture, color and its ability to mimic and play on other materials such as stone, fabric and organic plant life.

Most of my forms are made by micro shell forming and anticlastic raising exploiting the plastic quality of the metals. Using these techniques I can make very unusual forms which are organic in appearance from flat metal sheet. This is very useful for duplicating nature.
