Julie Armbruster

Picture
I am a mixed media painter, working with graphite, acrylic, ink, and epoxy resin to create a catalogue of images that convey my perceptions. Images are often repeated, developing conclusions that point to the unnatural and destructive behavior of humanity, whose collective view insists on being the exception to the laws of nature. My most recent work delves further into the imaginative world of the individual characters and their personal struggle to understand their unique potential. Often realized as human-animal hybrids, they attempt to make sense of the reality they are presented with. The characters evolve and shift seeking some sort of resolution, but they are often faced with resistance and frustration.

The arts are an innate part of Sandra Bottinelli’s character and life. She moved through various mediums over the years, spending most of her time with oils. Her subject matter consists of everything we can see and what we cannot. Behind every layer of paint sits a palpable allurement, an energy that leaves its viewers contemplating its source.
Bottinelli’s education compiles a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan including studies in Salamanca and Barcelona, Spain.

Molly Courcelle
Molly Courcelle Fine Art

Picture
I have always been fascinated by paint...the feel of the medium, the effects of the brushes, the push and pull of line, plain, and form. With this in mind, my work is as much about the process of painting as it is about the final image. Each painting is its own unique experience. Inspiration starts with something specific from a natural object, such as the color on a petal, the shape of a leaf, or the line formed with a stem. With a heavy focus on line and composition, the painting shifts and changes until complete. Much of it is spontaneous, much of it is reactionary. The result is a painting that is generally abstract yet essentially organic.

Philip DeAngelo
Broken Road Studio

Picture
DeAngelo is known for his rich palette, depth of color and the textural element of his paintings. Using a variety of substrates, his subject is often an uncluttered landscape, where it is the form of the trees, combined with the mood set by the sky and the movement created by wind that convey his message.

Broken Road Studio is a working studio and gallery located in the heart of Asheville's historic River Arts District, which boasts over 170 artists' studios, its own brewery and possibly the best BBQ in Western North Carolina.

Patricia Hargrove
Portraits by Patricia Hargrove

Picture
Portraits should be about personality as well as likeness. My work is about capturing “inner” light as well as the outer light around my subject, thus, reflecting the personality of the sitter. With 35 years experience in painting children, teens, adults and professional portraits, my work hangs in homes and public buildings across Eastern United States. Many of my portraits are “environmental” portraits set in the landscapes that are part of the subject’s family heritage. Working by commission in oil, watercolor, pastel and pencil, my clients have a variety of mediums to choose from to best suit personality, environment or resources.

Painting the classical way, from life, always interests me. I paint still life, figure, and landscape in oil and watercolor. I frequently paint outdoors... beside streams, off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Working in the studio I often paint larger mountain vistas, commissioned landscapes, and portraits.

My journey as an artist has meandered through many occupations and stages of life. Beauty matters to me and has always been the lens through which I have viewed the world. Whether it is a lovely table and excellent food or sewing fabulous Halloween costumes or being mentored by my grandmother in traditional handicrafts, I appreciate the love creativity brings to life. Now I am using oil paint and canvas and brush to capture light and time.

It is great fun to take photos of all my journeys and hikes and then come to the studio and recreate fond memories. I hope you also enjoy sharing my moments with me.

Stephen St. Claire
Broken Road Studio

Picture
I am fascinated with the contrast of the seeming randomness in the world and the 'controlling order' apparent upon closer inspection. When I look out at a field of wildflowers, I see complete randomness in the "placement" of the grasses and flowers, but upon close inspection, there is an interesting symmetry and order in the shape and design of everything in that field. To me, this balance is both beautiful and interesting.

"The technique I have chosen to use for most of my work utilizes a thin layer of metal leaf applied to the canvas (gold, silver and copper). I have found that working on top of the metal leaf with my oil paints enables me to take advantage of the interplay of light, as it reflects off the metal leaf, through the translucent layers of paint and into the eye of the viewer.

Delphian Artistry

Picture
I have the ability to paint my dreams. I know the color of passion and the texture of pain. I can invoke the intangible; awaken the unknown; inflict the unexpected. I feel emotions to an incomprehensible depth and it is my burden and privilege to bring others in to that abyss. I conquer fear. I experience doubt. I overcome limitations and nurture my imagination. I am an artist. And it is a wonderful thing.

Karen Weihs
Broken Road Studio

Picture
As an oil painter and colorist, I love to create images that depict endless visual space. Forsaking all details, I conjure patterns of light, air and reflection that feel ethereal and diffused. Layered pigments, contrasting colors and geometric shapes breathe life into my images, and while my landscapes are minimal in representational content, I find viewers often see the familiar in the abstract. I wrote my book, “Out of My Mind: Life Lessons as an Oil Painter,” to both impart my knowledge painstakingly gained from decades of painting and to explain my spirituality and dedication in helping others reconnect.

Constance Williams
Constance Williams Gallery

Picture
"Inspiration always exists for me, and it finds me working every day." Constance Williams creates luminous fine art paintings in the ancient medium known as "encaustic", using modern tools such as a blowtorch to fuse and enhance dozens of layers of wax, tree resin and color. Durable and heat-resistant, her abstracts, landscapes and more are highly-reflective, appearing to be lit from within. Constance's hand-built clay sculptures focus on the human form, with a nod to antiquity in their finishes.

Her light-filled working studios are combined with a friendly, shoppable gallery, showcasing local artisans, several of whom create their works just upstairs.
