Beginning With Oils: Finding Your Voice with Susan Sinyai

Feeling comfortable and successful with oils ( as with any medium) is a process, so this workshop will benefit not only the novice painter with some knowledge in the medium and wanting to brush up on their skills. Having two days to learn and then develop your own painting gets you in the groove for sure! The goal of this workshop is to guide you toward success , and end with a painting that makes you feel happy, and satisfied!

We will begin with the basics, using the landscape as our genre, and there will be step by step demonstrations along the way as each concept is explained. The painting will be developed using modern, more intuitive techniques, but not forgoing or forgetting some of the classical methods. We will cover how to build layers, and what medium to use, and when. Colors – understanding them, and how to work with a limited palette to create a more cohesive painting – how using colors properly help to create a sense of depth a sense of mood. Brushes – what brushes to use, how to hold them properly and use them to create different strokes and textures. What is glazing, how and when is that done?

How about scumbling? And, importantly, what are you trying to convey in your painting.
